Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys drew the ire of many on social media after claiming at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night that the U.S. is not “the home of the brave” because it hasn’t passed more gun control.
— CNN (@CNN) July 27, 2016
“Women are the answer,” Keys asserted ahead of her performance of her hit song “Superwoman” and before introducing Hillary Clinton, who appeared via webcam. “We have the power to ensure that this country gets on the right path. I dedicate this song to the Mothers of the Movement and all mothers who have lost their sons and daughters to senseless violence.”
“Until we deal with gun control in America,” she continued, “we cannot claim to be the home of the brave.”
At that, Twitter lit up with messages rebuking the celebrity musician.

@MarkDavis Alicia Keys claims we're not the home of the brave until we have gun control. How clueless is she?

Alicia Keys get off the stage. America "not the home of the brave"? So many died for you to get up on a stage and not respect them? Leave.

Keys spoke and sang on the same night Clinton formally secured the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.
