Massive 30-Person Brawl Breaks Out in Walmart After Teen Makes Fun of a Woman’s Dress

It didn’t take much for sparks to fly at one New York Walmart over the Fourth of July weekend.

Over the holiday break, last-minute shopping turned into quite the ordeal when a 30-person fistfight broke out right inside the doors of a Walmart in Rochester. According to WHEC-TV, the brawl included flying trashcans, baseball bats and cans of food.

The altercation arose when a few teenagers started making fun of one woman’s dress and began taking pictures of the outfit on their mobile phones. When the woman’s family members saw what was going on, a fight broke out. Before long, the brouhaha had grown to include dozens of fighters.

Baseball bats came into the picture when, according to Police Chief Jim VanBrederode, the melee escalated and brawlers went to the sporting goods section to find items with which to fight. And the ruckus wasn’t just with the teens — it included the adults, too.

“The adults jumped right in with the kids, and this is what it turned into,” VanBrederode said. “[I]t’s gotta start somewhere with parents, who brought these kids into the world.”

One of the offenders was 17-year-old Nykia Brooks, who allegedly split one 52-year-old man’s head open with a can of food. She — along with three others — was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, which is a felony, along with two other violations.

“People have no respect for other people and these situations are becoming much more common here in Monroe County,” VanBrederode said.

The New York Walmart said it plans to step up its security, particularly in the front of its stores, where the fight took place, but according to VanBrederode, the only thing that will work is discipline.

“If you’re in that video, you ought to be looking over your shoulder,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time before we come knocking on some doors.”

The police chief, describing the behavior as “disgusting,” said the department is still reviewing the security footage and does plan to make more arrests.
